In common with other members of the Crow (Corvidae) family Eurasian Magpies Pica pica are intelligent and resourceful birds. Several aspects of their behaviour are illustrated here including bathing (in a very muddy puddle this may have been deliberate as sticky mud might assist with the removal of parasites) and fighting (there are three birds involved just in case the picture causes any confusion!). The Magpie featured in the last two photographs was so zonked out by sunbathing on a hot day that it was possible for the photographer to capture these very close-up frame-filling portraits. The gaping of the bill is a mechanism for losing heat.
