·         Feather maintenance is a very important activity for birds and the Mute Swans Cygnus olor shown preening in several of these photographs leave the observer in little doubt that the process may be enjoyable. This activity maintains waterproofing as oil is applied from the preening gland and it also enables the swans to remain airworthy unless they have been moulting. Both sexes have black ‘knobs’ on their bills but those of the adult male (cobs) are larger than those of the females (pens).
