The Red Kite Milvus milvus, easily recognised by its forked tail, is one of the great success stories of individual species conservation in the UK. Several waves of artificial re-introduction of European bloodstock were used to reinforce the remaining native breeding population in Wales and this stunning raptor has now begun to spread quite widely, particularly in the Chilterns. Because these birds can fly long distances and they may reach the UK from continental Europe there are few concerns about compromising the native gene pool (which would have been limited anyway following the near extinction of this species as a native bird).
