The
striking plumage of the Eurasian
Hoopoe Upupa epops
makes confusion with any other bird unlikely and it also has a very
characteristic triple or double monotone call (the vernacular name is
onomatopoeic) usually delivered from prominent perches that just happens to
coincide with the lowest note that the photographer can whistle! These birds
were photographed in the South of France and the Vendée, where a nest was located in a nearby (but inaccessible) Oak Tree Quercus
sp. A steady supply of true crickets was being collected by the parent
birds, and some of these photographs, mostly cropped, and shot through a
heat-haze, illustrate behaviour that may also be seen on film by using the
second of the links displayed below.
