CORN BUNTING Emberiza calandra
- The distinctive song of the male Corn Bunting Emberiza calandra has been likened to the sound of jangling keys. This is a bird with a preference for farmland and in common with a number of other bird species sharing this habitat the population is in a state of significant decline. There would seem to be an urgent requirement for the provision of sufficient set-aside agricultural land (field margins and hedgerows) where the use of toxic pesticides is totally banned, thus allowing the re-establishment of the diverse insect and flower species that contribute to the food-chain of seed-eating and insectivorous farmland birds.
