·         This very pretty Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen was the first of several females to have been associated with the dog fox shown in the background of the final photograph. She used to boss him around (which he accepted – this avoided conflict) and she had a rather mischievous demeanour, investigating everything and often testing items such as the severed hosepipe with her teeth – testing might be an understatement in this case. She also dissembled a bamboo-filled bee-house tube by tube, quite an achievement. Luckily for her it was unoccupied. If anything had been bitten she was usually responsible. A favourite trick during the latter part of her time in the territory was to climb up on the patio table just outside the French windows but she was tricky to photograph there until shortly before she left for pastures new, having seemingly been lured away by a larger and more powerful potential mate with greater appeal! There is a photograph showing her reaction to having been photographed on Mammals 10. Suffice to say that the tables of dominance have since been turned on subsequent vixens by the dog fox and he definitely has the upper hand over the vixen that currently visits – although not over the other dog fox, to which he shows the utmost respect.
