The Common Frog Rana temporaria
produces spawn in large gelatinous masses whereas the Common Toad Bufo bufo and Natterjack Toad Epidalea
calamita
produce theirs in long strings. However tempting it might be readers are urged
not to transfer spawn from natural habitats as this will increase the risk of
spreading potentially lethal pathogens. In order to survive each pair of
amphibians attaining maturity would need just two of their multitudinous
offspring to survive for long enough to breed themselves so most tadpoles are
destined to be eaten by predators!
