NATTERJACK TOAD Epidalea calamita
- A tiny Natterjack Toad Epidalea calamita
is seen coming to terms with a complete change of
environment as it enters the terrestrial phase of its life and explores
the sand dunes of North West England. The apparently enormous grains of
sand and the nearby ground beetle exoskeleton give a good idea of scale
here. There is little evidence of the yellow dorsal stripe which readily
distinguishes the adult Natterjack from the closely related (and much more
successful) Common
Toad Bufo bufo.
