- These
portraits of Western
Green Lizards Lacerta
bilineata (les Lézards vert) were taken
in southern Brittany. The appearance of the juvenile is more subdued than
that of the adults and young Western Green Lizards could easily be
presumed to belong to an entirely different species. The darker colours
may help the young lizards to absorb heat more effectively, an important
advantage if they wish to avoid unnecessary exposure to predators. When
sunbathing on bracken the cryptic spotted pattern breaks up the outline of
the adult lizards, making them very difficult to see from any distance.
