This sequence of photographs shows a juvenile Grass
Snake Natrix helvetica helvetica
swimming through an Essex marshland in pursuit of Marsh Frogs Pelophylax ridibundus although the
hunt proved to be fruitless. These reptiles are excellent swimmers and the
splashes in the final photograph indicate that it might have disturbed a frog
that had not been noticed by the photographer as he was busy trying to track
the rapidly approaching snake, keep it in frame and (not always successfully)
in focus!
