An American species living at a site in London, this
handsomely marked Yellow-bellied Slider Trachemys
scripta scripta one of
several distinctively marked subspecies of the Pond Slider, was at least
3,900 miles away from its natural habitat, doubtless in consequence of having
been kept in a vivarium and then irresponsibly released after it had outgrown
its home. This unfortunate reptile may or may not survive a relatively cool
British climate in which it would be unlikely to breed successfully, even if in
the company of other members of the same species.
