These
photographs of a splendid female Western
Green Lizard Lacerta
bilineata bilineata
(le Lézard vert) were taken in the
Vendée, France. The two dorsal white stripes referred to in the
scientific name are faint in this example. The lower eyelid appears to be
semi-transparent, enabling the lizard to be able to detect the movement of
potential predators when the eye is covered. Females are more subdued in their
colouring than the males, and this individual appears to have avoided any need
to autotomise her very long tail, one that extends for approximately two thirds
of her length.
